Summer Academy for Early Music Graz 2021

The summer academy, initiated by the international teachers of the Institute for Early Music and Performance Practice, took place for the fourth time in September 2021. A total of 46 participants from all over the world met at the Graz University of Art to work on the repertoire and context of Central European music from the Renaissance to classical music, to make music and learn. In addition to individual lessons, group lessons with chamber music, consort play and historical dance played a central role and allowed the participants to get to know each other. In addition, morning Feldenkrais lessons were offered. A very good and fruitful group atmosphere was created among the 46 participants and 13 lecturers. The daily baroque dance classes in the group as well as the evening joint events or the final concerts contributed significantly to this.

With the help of the David Herzog Fund, the participation of six Israeli musicians was promoted. The intercultural setting, the numerous group events and the constant artistic and academic engagement with cultural history provided ideal conditions for a lasting cultural exchange and for bringing young Israeli musicians closer to their mostly European roots. The funded scholarship holders were a great enrichment for the Summer Academy. As highly gifted musicians, all six scholarship holders were active in many cross-class ensembles and took part with great pleasure in the daily baroque dance units as well as in the evening events and concerts. Overall, important personal and professional relationships and connections were established and strengthened at the Summer Academy. Especially in the field of classical music, but especially in the field of historical performance practice, it is considered necessary in Israel to continue or train in Europe or the USA. At the same time, the further training and professional training of young musicians with mostly European roots can help to build new relationships with Austria and Europe.
